SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. — The St. Mary's University Women's Tennis team improved to 8-1 on the year with a lopsided 6-1 victory over 24th-ranked Ferris State to conclude the team's Spring Break trip.
"Ferris State is a really good team," said Director of Tennis
Bill Macom. "Their doubles are solid, and the singles lineup is deep. I think we picked a good day to play some of our best tennis of the week, and I think our conditioning really made a difference today. In most of the matches, I felt sure that we were going to hold up pretty well mentally. We played with a lot of confidence."
St. Mary's won the first two doubles matches to win the opening point before the Bulldogs (5-4) were able to get a late break of serve to win the top line of doubles, 7-5.
The duo of
Gia Posito (Houston) and
Selina Wu (San Gabriel, Calif.) won 6-1 at number two, while the tandem of
Paula Garrote (Cartagena, Spain) and
Alessia Terlizzi (Andria, Italy) posted a 6-2 win at number three for the early lead.
As the action turned to singles, Terlizzi won the first nine games of her match before her opponent had to retire from the match. Posito finished moments behind her with a 6-2, 6-1 win at number four.
Garrote clinched the match for the Rattlers with her 6-2, 6-1 victory on court five, and Wu came back strong to blank her opponent in the third set after dropping the second set 7-5.
The Bulldogs scored their lone point at number two singles as the pair battled it out, with Yara Madi eventually winning 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), and Sifuentes wrapped it up with her 6-3, 6-4 win at number six.
The Rattlers return home to host Western New Mexico for the Lone Star Conference opener on Friday, March 28. The match will be Senior Day and starts at 10 a.m.
