KINGSVILLE, Texas — St. Mary's University senior outfielders
Garrett Brooks and
Trey Guajardo combined for five of the team's eight hits in a 5-1 loss at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday evening.
The Rattlers' (14-9, 12-9) baseball team scored its lone run on eight hits, matching the Javelinas (18-9, 17-8) in the hits category, but the defense committed four errors as TAMUK took game one of the four-game series.
Brooks (Spring Branch, Texas) was 3-for-5, while Guajardo (San Juan, Texas) was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Senior
Hogan Heller (San Antonio) had the team's only extra-base hit of the night, doubling to lead off the fourth inning, and coming around to score the lone run.
Sophomore
Gabe Cook (San Antonio) dropped to 2-4 on the year. He gave up two earned runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings, walking three and striking out two.
Cameron Hodges (San Antonio) was on the hill the next 3 1/3 frames, surrendering only one run on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Senior
Brett Brown (Sinton, Texas) pitched the final inning, walking one and striking out a pair.
The Javelinas spread their eight hits among eight different batters and six of the eight hits were singles, with a pair of doubles on the night.
The two teams return to the diamond on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
