WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The St. Mary's University Men's Tennis team got back into the win column on Wednesday, defeating Palm Beach Atlantic 5-0 in a clinch-match/postseason scoring format due to time constraints.
"This was a good road win for us," said Director of Tennis
Bill Macom. "Doubles improved a little, and playing a clinch format gave them a bit of pressure and a sense of what the conference tournament format is like at the end of the semester."
The Sailfish (3-8) won the first doubles match, getting a 6-2 victory at number two, but the Rattlers (4-4) responded by winning the final two matches for the all-important doubles point.
Aaron Ben Anton (Remseck, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany) and
Pierre Copin (Vidauban, Var, France) won 6-4 at three doubles, and the team of
Leonardo Fabbri (Faenza, Italy) and
Daniel Matheu Baldor (Madrid, Spain) won 6-3 at the one spot.
Freshman
Lucas Castillo Sanchez (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) posted the first double bagel win of his dual career, winning 6-0, 6-0 at the third line.
Alvaro Soler (Alicante, Spain) moved up a spot to number two for Wednesday's match, responding with a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
Both Copin and freshman
Lincoln Baldonado (Glendale, Ariz.) finished at the same time in helping the Rattlers clinch the shutout win. Copin won 6-2, 6-3 on court four, while Baldonado won 6-3, 6-3 at six for the 5-0 final.
Fabbri was unfinished on court one after winning the opening set 6-3, while Anton was leading 6-3, 4-3 when the match was halted.
The Rattlers have won match remaining on the trip, facing #25 Ferris State on Friday in Satellite Beach.
