Men's Basketball Drops First Overtime Game of Season

SAN ANTONIO — For the first time in 2024-25, the No. 25 St. Mary's University Men's Basketball team dropped an overtime contest, falling 79-74 to Cameron on Saturday evening.

As they have been much of the season, free throws proved to be a deciding factor, as the Rattlers (18-6, 15-3) made only 3-for-8 in the extra period, while the Aggies (9-16, 6-13) hit 7-for-9 from the line during OT.

The Aggies were also one of the few teams this season to out-rebound the Rattlers, winning the battle of the boards 47-to-39, including grabbing 22 on the offensive glass. St. Mary's is now 4-1 in overtime games in 2024-25, tying the school record for most overtime games in a season. The 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2016-17 teams also all played five OT contests.

Senior Franklin Agu (London, England) had one of the best games of his career, scoring a career-high 27 points and tying for game-high honors with 12 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Agu's previous scoring high was 21, which he did twice last season. Agu also added four assists and was 9-for-12 at the free throw line.

Damani Claxton (Bronx, N.Y.) chipped in 17 points and four assists, scoring in double digits for the 20th consecutive time. Junior Eddie McPhee (Denver) tied for game-high honors with a career-high tying six assists.

The Rattlers held the lead for over 30 minutes in the game, as the contest was tied six times and there were five lead changes. St. Mary's also scored 46 of its 74 points in the paint.

With the loss, StMU moves into a tie for second place in the Lone Star Conference standings, tied with Lubbock Christian, which the Rattlers hold the tiebreaker over via a win in Lubbock back in November.

The team plays three of its final four games of the regular season on the road, beginning at West Texas A&M on Thursday evening. The Buffs defeated Western New Mexico 83-58 on Saturday.
