Women's Basketball Drops Game to Javelinas

KINGSVILLE, Texas — Foul trouble throughout the game hampered the St. Mary's University Women's Basketball team's attempt at a comeback on Saturday afternoon at Texas A&M-Kingsville as they fell 57-48.

The Rattlers (11-9, 7-7) were whistled for an uncharacteristic 23 fouls on the day, and all five starters had at least two. StMU outscored the Javelinas (13-8, 8-5) in the fourth quarter, 17-11, in pushing for the comeback, but TAMUK made five of six attempts at the free throw line in the final 23 seconds to secure the win.

StMU freshman Christin Callens (Houston) scored 20 points, while junior Imani Ivery (Houston) added 11. The pair, along with freshman Raynne Malik (London, Ontario) and junior Quezia Bertoni (Sao Paulo, Brazil) all had five rebounds as the Rattlers outrebounded the Javelinas, 31-to-29. StMU also held TAMUK to only four offensive rebounds and without any second chance points on the day.

Callens led the Rattlers with three steals, as the Gold and Blue swiped 10, and junior guard Andrea Montesinos (Valencia, Spain) blocked the only shot.

The Rattlers return home to host a pair of nationally-ranked teams in No. 7 UT Tyler on Thursday and #2 Texas Woman's on Saturday. Both teams are 14-1 in Lone Star action after posting lopsided wins on Saturday.
