SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's University Women's Basketball team was never able to get into an offensive rhythm on Thursday evening, shooting a season-low 27 percent from the field to fall to Central Oklahoma, 54-42.
The Rattlers, who are receiving votes in the WBCA poll, finish the non-conference season with a 5-1 mark and move to 7-2 overall, which is the best start through nine games since the 2018-19 team began 8-1.
Sophomore forward
Christin Callens (Houston) was the only Rattler to score in double figures with 14 points, and she narrowly missed a double-double with a game-high tying nine rebounds. Callens also chipped in two assists and a steal.
One of the big positives for the Rattlers in the game was that sophomore
Peyton Stellato (Fort Worth, Texas) was able to make her debut in the Gold & Blue after fighting through an injury in the preseason. Stellato played nine minutes, getting an assist, a steal and a blocked shot.
Junior
Allie Garcia (Adelaide, South Australia) swiped a game-high three balls, and she and
Lena Newby (Cibolo, Texas) tied for second on the club with five rebounds each.
The Bronchos (3-7) were led in scoring by Olivia Quapaw, who scored 14 off the bench, and Jerney Bennett blocked six shots and altered the approach to the basket throughout the night. Kaitlyn McCarn also just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
St. Mary's now takes a break for the holidays, returning to competition on Jan. 2 against Midwestern State at 5:30 p.m.
