SAN ANTONIO — The No. 13 St. Mary's University Men's Basketball team was unable to dig itself out of a large deficit, despite hitting a season-high 10 three-pointers, falling to Fort Lewis, 81-68, on Wednesday in the River City Holiday Classic.
The Rattlers (8-2) trailed by as many as 24 midway through the second half, 62-38, but the Rattlers scored the next five and cut it to 12 points, 69-57 on a triple by senior
Damani Claxton (Bronx, N.Y.), but were unable to get any closer.
StMU took a season-high 39 three-pointers in the game, tying for the second-most in a single game in school history, knotting the 2019-20 team against St. Edward's on Feb. 20 and the 2021-22 team against Regis in overtime on Nov. 13.
Claxton led the Rattlers with 23 points, and he tied for the team lead with four assists. Both junior
Justin Britt (Goose Creek, S.C.) and senior
Sebastian Mendoza (Riverside, Calif.) each scored 12 points, and senior
Olaverr Camacho (Barberena, SR, Guatemala) led the game with nine rebounds despite playing only two minutes in the second period.
Tying Claxton for team-high honors in assists with four was fellow senior
Wayne Wiggins (Mansfield, Texas), and Mendoza chipped in three as the Rattlers collected 14 assists on 21 made baskets. Wiggins also led the game with three steals.
St. Mary's had more rebounds on offense (19) than defense (13) in the contest, and were outrebounded in the game, 35-to-32.
The Rattlers step back into Lone Star Conference play, hosting Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the final game of the 2025 calendar year.
