CANYON, Texas — In a recurring theme this season, the St. Mary's University Men's Soccer team controlled a majority of the game, but was unable to get the win, falling 2-1 at West Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon.
The Rattlers (3-7-6, 2-6-1) outshot the Buffaloes (6-7-2, 3-4-2) 20-to-6 on the day, and took all five corners in the match, but WT keeper Zach Kos made nine saves, allowing only one goal through on a score by junior
Gael Gallegos (Laredo, Texas) in the ninth minute.
"Unfortunately, today was another performance that has been typical of our season," said Head Coach
Johnny Clifford. "We played well today and stuck to our game plan. We created a lot of chances in the game and really could have scored five or six times, but we once again fell short. This is extremely disappointing, and I'm really at a loss for words right now."
The goal by Gallegos is his second of the year, tying him with
Enzo Jaques (Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil),
Luke Mulkey (Parker, Texas), and
Cooper Stephens (Richardson, Texas) for the team lead. Gallegos leads the team with 16 shots on goal in 2025.
"Our University and fans deserve more," Clifford said. "We will now look to finish off the season on a positive note."
The Rattlers host Midwestern State on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for Senior Night. The Mustangs have won their last three matches, including a 2-0 decision on Saturday afternoon over Sul Ross State.
