SAN ANTONIO — A penalty kick in the 42nd minute by Sul Ross State was the only goal on Saturday evening at Sigma Beta Chi, as the Lobos upset St. Mary's University 1-0.
The Rattlers are now 1-2-6 on the year and 0-1-1 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Lobos are 4-2-2 and 2-0 in conference action.
"This was a tough day at the office for us today," said Head Coach
Johnny Clifford. "We really threw everything at their goal today, but it just would not go in. I give credit to Sul Ross State for a good game plan, and I honestly thought their keeper had an incredible day, but ultimately, we hold our own future."
The Rattlers took a season-high tying 20 shots during the game, with four on goal by four different players, while the defense limited the Lobos to three shots with two on goal. Former Rattler Lewis Coates scored the game-winner with his PK into the lower left portion of the net.
"I thought we did more than enough to win the game today," Clifford said. "Unfortunately, again, it did not bounce our way. We will take some time tomorrow to evaluate and be ready on Monday to get back to work to prepare to play our rivals in Austin."
Twelve different Rattlers took at least one shot on the afternoon, led by three each from
Calum Murdoch (Christchurch, New Zealand) and
Gael Gallegos (Laredo, Texas).
The Rattlers play at St. Edward's on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Battle of the Saints. The Hilltoppers lost a 3-2 decision on Saturday to Lubbock Christian at Lewis-Chen Family Field.
