Men's Soccer Stumbles Against Dustdevils

SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's University Men's Soccer team outshot Texas A&M International 16-to-5 in the game, but the Dustdevils were able to sneak a goal in the 75th minute for the 1-0 win at Sigma Beta Chi Field on Saturday evening.

"It's not for a lack of effort," said Head Coach Johnny Clifford. "We created a lot of chances in the air, on the ground. I thought their goalkeeper was excellent, but once again, the buck stops with us. We've got to be masters of our own destiny, and when we create good opportunities like that, we've got to put one away."

Both Gael Gallegos (Laredo, Texas) and Enzo Jaques (Porto Allegre, RS, Brazil) put two shots on frame, while Axel Villegas (Cordoba, Mexico) added one, but Ioannis Koupepides was able to save all five shots for the Dustdevils (3-5-5, 1-4-1).

The Rattlers (2-4-6, 1-3-1) also had plenty of opportunities on set pieces, securing eight corner kicks in the game, compared to two for the Dustdevils. The teams were whistled for six offsides calls in the game, with StMU getting called five times.

TAMIU scored on its only shot on goal in the game, as it took a total of five on the night.

The Rattlers return to the road, playing at Lone Star Conference newcomer UT Dallas on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Comets defeated Midwestern State, 2-0, in Wichita Falls on Saturday night.
