SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's University Men's Basketball team used a 15-point scoring run in the second half to win its second-straight game in 2025 with a 72-62 victory over Texas A&M International on Sunday afternoon.
The Rattlers (8-4, 5-1) trailed by seven with 9:50 remaining, 52-45, but senior
Lachlan Bofinger (Sydney, Australia) and junior
Wayne Wiggins (Mansfield, Texas) combined to score 15 straight, with Bofinger pouring in 10, to grab the 60-52 lead with 5:55 to play and they never trailed again.
Bofinger collected his fourth consecutive double-double, leading the game with 28 points and 10 rebounds. His 28 points are one off his career-high of 29 from Feb. 3, 2024, against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Wiggins scored in double figures for the second straight game, chipping in a career-high 16, while junior guard
Damani Claxton (Bronx, N.Y.) added 10.
St. Mary's turned the ball over only seven times in the game, but the pressure defense applied in the second half forced the Dustdevils (7-9, 2-5) into 16 miscues, including three in a row between 8:42 and 7:54 while the Rattlers were mounting their comeback.
The 5-1 start for St. Mary's in Lone Star Conference play ties for the best start since joining the league in 2019-20. The 2021-22 team was also 5-1 through six games, ending the year 9-5 and tied for fourth in the standings.
For the third time this season, the Rattlers scored 50 points in the paint, matching the totals from the season opener at Regis (Nov. 8) and against Sul Ross State (Dec. 7). StMU also did a good job of turning their 16 offensive rebounds into a season-high tying 20 second chance points.
St. Mary's heads out on a four-game road trip beginning Thursday, Jan. 9, at DBU. The Rattlers then play UT Tyler, Cameron and Oklahoma Christian before returning home on Jan. 23 against Angelo State. DBU defeated Oklahoma Christian 92-77 in Edmond on Sunday to move to 6-1 in league play.
