LAWTON, Okla. — The St. Mary's University Women's Basketball team outscored Cameron 21-9 in the fourth quarter to come away with a 56-51 victory on the road on Thursday evening.
The Rattlers (8-7, 4-5) shot 72.7 percent from the field in the final 10 minutes, including 3-3 from beyond the arc, while holding the Aggies (2-12, 0-10) to 22.2 percent. The defense of freshman
Raynne Malik (London, Ontario) was a big factor, as she blocked three shots and grabbed five rebounds in the final quarter to go along with six points. She ended with the second double-double of her career, scoring a game- and career-high 15 points with 10 rebounds and four blocks.
Sophomore guard
Andrea Montesinos (Valencia, Spain) hit a huge three-pointer with 5.9 seconds remaining and time expiring on the shot clock to put the Rattlers up five and close the door on an Aggies comeback.
Freshman
Tiara Louis also scored in double figures for the Gold and Blue, as she scored all 10 of her points in the first half.
The Rattlers held one of the top scorers in the Lone Star Conference in check, as Shamica Smith scored only seven. She entered the game averaging 14.8 per game. Aubrie Megehee came off the bench to lead CU with 12 points, as she was 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Smith led with nine rebounds.
StMU junior
Imani Ivery (Houston) recorded four assists and three steals, while
Quezia Bertoni (Sao Paulo, Brazil) collected a game-high five assists, tying her career-high for the fourth time this year.
The Rattlers jumped out to an early 5-1 lead to start the night as the team pounded the ball inside. The Aggies scored the next five to take a 6-5 advantage and the teams went back-and-forth throughout the remainder of the first half with seven lead changes.
Cameron held a 26-25 lead at the break, but came out firing in the third quarter, using a 10-2 run to take a nine-point advantage, 38-29, with 3:03 remaining. The Rattlers returned the favor, using a 10-2 run of their own to begin the fourth quarter, taking the 45-44 lead with 7:51 to play and they never trailed again.
St. Mary's remains in Oklahoma, playing at Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Eagles dropped a 65-61 decision to St. Edward's on Thursday evening.
