SAN ANTONIO — Two quick scores by the visiting Lynn Fighting Knights put the St. Mary's University Women's Soccer team behind the eight-ball, and they couldn't recover despite having five shots on goal, falling 2-0 in the season opener.
Â
The Rattlers won't have long to dwell on the setback as they host Westminster (Utah) on Saturday at 5 p.m. The Griffons opened their season on Thursday at Sigma Beta Chi Field against Texas A&M International and ended in a scoreless draw. Lynn improves to 2-0 on the year after defeating St. Edward's in Austin on Thursday.
Â
St. Mary's outshot the Fighting Knights 12-to-10 on the evening and senior goalkeeper
Rebecca Difronzo (Bari, Italy) made six saves after surrendering the pair of goals.Â
Â
Despite being double and triple-teamed throughout much of the match, junior
Shelby Paniagua (Cibolo, Texas) managed two shots on goal in her three attempts.
Â
Notes:Â
- Eliza Cerda, Ana Parra and Michelle Ramirez all made their first starts in the Gold & Blue.
- Rebecca Difronzo needs five more saves to tie Erin Longford (2016-19) for second all-time in school history. She is also 30 away from knotting the all-time mark with 261 saves.
- Last season, Westminster and St. Mary's battled to a scoreless draw in Salt Lake City in the first meeting between the two clubs.
- This was the first-ever meeting between the Rattlers and Fighting Knights.
