Women's Soccer Earns First Draw of Season Against #14 Mavericks

SAN ANTONIO – A 25-yard free kick for a goal in the 77th minute by Shelby Paniagua netted a 1-1 tie for the St. Mary's University Women's Soccer team against #14 Colorado Mesa on Thursday night.

The Mavericks (2-0-2) scored in the 47th minute on a rebound goal by Braelyn Baclayon to get the scoring started.

Paniagua, a junior midfielder from Cibolo, Texas evened the score on her high looping ball that sailed into the top left corner of the net over the outstretched hands of the CMU goalkeeper. It is the second goal of the season in as many games for the returning All-American. It also marks the 13th goal of her career.

The two teams were aggressive over the final 13 minutes but were unable to break the stalemate.

Senior goalkeeper Rebecca Difronzo (Bari, Italy) made three saves in the game and held off a Mavericks team that took nine corner kicks compared to only three for StMU.

The game concludes the non-conference portion of the season for the Rattlers (2-2-1). St. Mary's will begin Lone Star Conference play against newcomer Sul Ross State on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
