SAN ANTONIO – A pair of goals in less than a minute by sophomore
Gael Gallegos and a clean sheet by goalkeeper
Johnny Thurbin helped the St. Mary's University Men's Soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Academy of Art on Thursday afternoon.
The win gives Rattlers Head Coach
Johnny Clifford the StMU record for Men's Soccer coaching victories with 66, breaking the mark of 65 held by Dave Stolarski (1974-81).
It is the second-straight clean sheet for Thurbin, a junior from Lingfield, Surrey, England as he made one save.
The game was delayed almost an hour while the two teams waited on a center official to make it to Sigma Beta Chi Field.
Junior forward
Calum Murdoch (Christchurch, New Zealand) got the scoring started for the Rattlers (2-1-2), taking a cross from senior
Cooper Stephens (Richardson, Texas) on a one-touch from senior
Sofian Maghouz (London, England) in the 55th minute.
In the 71st minute, freshman
Jamie Thompson (Insch, Scotland) passed the ball to the middle of the field from the left side and Gallegos flicked the ball into the upper right corner with his left foot from the edge of the box for the 2-0 lead.
Gallegos stole the ball on the ensuing kickoff and drove to the top of the penalty box, beating the keeper who came out of the net for his fourth goal of the year, and second brace.
The Rattlers defense limited the Urban Knights (0-2-1) to only four shots and one shot on goal, while they tallied 15 shots on offense with five shots on goal.
St. Mary's remains at home, hosting Texas A&M International on Saturday at 5 p.m. in a non-conference contest.
