CANYON, Texas — Back-to-back crooked innings for the second-ranked West Texas A&M Softball team dashed the hopes of St. Mary's University's club making their first appearance in the Lone Star Conference Championship Finals as they won 9-1 on Friday evening.
Â
The Rattlers (32-24) scored their lone run on three hits – two of which were by sophomore
Raegan Tennill (Corpus Christi, Texas) – while the Lady Buffs (47-6) plated nine runs on nine hits with three StMU errors.Â
Â
The Lady Buffs took the lead in the first on a solo home run by pitcher Emilee Boyer.
Â
In the fourth, Holder walked and was sacrificed to second by Gomez. Dugi reached on an error by the second baseman and Holder hustled home to knot the game at 1-1. WT answered with four in the bottom of the inning, thanks in part to three Rattler errors to open up a 5-1 lead. They added four more in the fifth to win 9-1.
Â
Junior
Jadyn Abrego (San Antonio) fell to 6-7 on the year after pitching 3 1/3 innings. She gave up one earned run on four hits. Senior
Sara Robertson (Lorena, Texas), junior
Savannah Youngblood (Kingwood, Texas) and junior
Madeline Bloom (Poway, Calif.) all worked in relief.
Â
The Rattlers will await word on selection to the NCAA Championship. The selection show is Monday, May 6 at 10 a.m. ET on NCAA.com.
