SAN ANTONIO — It was a Good Friday for the St. Mary's University Women's Tennis team as they defeated UT Tyler 5-2 at Rohrbach Tennis Stadium in extremely windy conditions.
Â
"We just did a better job handling the wind today than our opponents in doubles," said Director of Tennis
Bill Macom. "And we were fortunate to carry that momentum into some straight set wins. They were a difficult team to beat."
Â
The Rattlers (8-4, 2-1 Lone Star Conference) won the doubles point via a sweep with identical 6-4 scores. The No. 19 tandem of junior
Karen Kondo (Tokyo, Japan) and freshman
Selina Wu (San Gabriel, Calif.) were the first to finish, defeating #27 Muskan Gupta and Allison Schwartz.
Â
The duo of freshman
Janel Ospanova (Karaganda, Kazakhstan) and sophomore
Stela Sifuentes (Eagle Pass, Texas) won at number three, while junior
Paula Garrote (Alicante, Spain) and sophomore
Alessia Terlizzi (Andria, Italy) completed the sweep with their win at number two.
Â
Terlizzi didn't drop a single game once the match turned to singles action, winning 6-0, 6-0 at number four to vie the Rattlers a 2-0 lead.
Â
Wu also blanked her opponent in the first set on court two and held on for a 6-4 victory in set two. Sifuentes clinched the victory for the Rattlers with her 6-3, 6-2 win at line six.
Â
Garrote won her first match against a nationally-ranked opponent in the Gold and Blue, defeating #12 Gupta 6-4, 6-3 on court one for the fifth team point. Garrote is now 1-1 against ranked foes this year.
