SAN ANTONIO — A pair of dominant pitching performances led to back-to-back shutouts for the St. Mary's University Softball team on Tuesday.
Jadyn Abrego and
Madeline Bloom kept St. Edward's University off the scoreboard, winning 8-0 and 4-0.
The junior pitchers combined to allow only 11 hits over 12 innings, winning the first two in the Battle of the Saints series.
Abrego (San Antonio) allowed five hits and struck out one, while Bloom (Poway, Calif.) scattered six hits in seven innings with four strikeouts. Neither pitcher walked a batter. Abrego moves to 2-1 on the year, while Bloom picks up her first win (1-4).
The Rattlers (10-10, 5-3 Lone Star Conference) scored eight runs on six hits in the first game, and were aided by five Hilltopper (4-17, 2-8 Lone Star) errors. The six hits were recorded by six different hitters and sophomore
Raegan Tennill (Corpus Christi, Texas) drove in two.
In the nightcap, the top three in the lineup collected five of the team's seven hits. Senior
Destiny Salinas (San Antonio) was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Tennill was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk.
The two teams conclude the series on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Rattlers have already won their second-straight series, while the Hilltoppers are looking to plate their first run of the series in game three.
