SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's University Women's Basketball team held Western New Mexico scoreless for 15:28 – including the entire second quarter – en route to a 64-45 victory in the Lone Star Conference opener for the Rattlers.
It is the first time in school history the Rattlers have held a team scoreless in a quarter in the
Valerie Huizar era, bettering the two points the 2022-23 team held North American to on Nov. 22.
The two teams combined for 52 fouls, 43 free throw attempts and 42 turnovers, though the Rattlers (5-2, 1-0) shot well from the field for the entire game, connecting on 47.6 percent (20-42).
Freshman
Christin Callens (Houston) led the game with 14 points and had a team-high seven rebounds, while senior
Stina Svilberg (Tallinn, Estonia) came off the bench to add 11 points behind the strength of three three-pointers.
All 13 active players for the Rattlers recorded at least one rebound as StMU out-rebounded the Mustangs (0-7, 0-2) 46-to-26 in the game.
Junior
Sheridan Kavanagh (Melbourne, Australia) made her return to the lineup, scoring four points and grabbing three rebounds in eight minutes of action. It is her first game back since being injured right after the Nov. 25, 2023, game against Oklahoma Baptist. Kavanagh scored a layup on her first possession in the contest in the second quarter to raucous applause from both the bench and the fans.
Freshman
Kaydence Menchaca (Beeville, Texas) also made her first appearance for the Rattlers. She scored five points, dished out two assists, had a steal and a rebound in nine minutes of action.
Alina Martin was the only Mustang to score in double figures with 13 points, scoring all 13 in the final quarter as she had two of the team's four steals in the final 10 minutes. Naomi Kimble led the game with eight rebounds, including four of the team's 11 on the offensive glass.
