AUSTIN, Texas — A tough third quarter hurt the St. Mary's University Women's Basketball team in the 2024-25 season opener against Colorado School of Mines on Friday afternoon on the St. Edward's campus, as they fell 72-49.
The Rattlers (0-1) were outscored 25-to-12 in the third stanza after entering the locker room down two, 25-23. The team fought back to shoot 60% in the fourth quarter (6-for-10), but the Orediggers (1-0) increased their lead by eight.
Freshman
Christin Callens (Houston) led the Rattlers in scoring with 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting, while sophomore guard
Andrea Montesinos (Valencia, Spain) and freshman forward
Raynne Malik (London, Ontario, Canada) tied for team-high honors with six rebounds.
The Rattlers concentrated on developing the inside game as they scored 34 points in the paint and sank 9-of-11 at the free throw line.
Four of the five starters for StMU are new to the team this season, with senior
Stina Svilberg (Tallinn, Estonia) the only returner on the floor at tip. All 11 available players saw at least six minutes of action
Colorado School of Mines was led in scoring by both Audrey Beaty and Peyton Freiermuth with 13 points each, while a trio of 'Diggers had four rebounds and Josephine Howery had a game-high five assists.
The Rattlers don't have long to rest as they face Regis on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Rangers open their season at St. Edward's on Friday evening.
