DALLAS — The St. Mary's University Women's Basketball team once again made its presence felt in the paint, scoring 42 of its 69 points there in the 69-65 victory over UT Dallas on Wednesday evening.
The Rattlers improve to 3-1 on the year, while the Comets, who will join the Lone Star Conference in 2025, fall to 2-3.
For the fourth straight time in her short career, freshman
Christin Callens established a new career-high in scoring, leading the game with 24 points. Callens was 9-for-17 from the field and hit 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
Callens also tied teammates
Andrea Montesinos (Valencia, Spain) and
Imani Ivery (Houston) in the rebounds category with eight each. The eight boards are a career-high for both Ivery and Montesinos and tie Callens' career-high. Ivery also led the team with four assists.
Freshman
Raynne Malik (London, Ontario) was also a force underneath the Comets' basket, blocking three shots. She has at least one swat in all four contests and three each in the last two.
Freshman
Charli Graziano (Perth, Australia) had a perfect shooting night, making her only three-point attempt and draining all four of her free throw attempts for seven points. With 35 seconds left, the Comets began to foul but had only been whistled twice in the quarter, so Graziano was fouled three times in five seconds before she stepped to the line, where she nailed both tries. After a UTD layup and back-to-back timeouts, senior
Stina Svilberg (Tallinn, Estonia) was fouled with 13 ticks left, and she also sank both free throws to ice the game.Â
The Rattlers out-rebounded their fourth straight opponent, bringing down 40 compared to 32 for UTD.Â
StMU travels to Edinburg, Texas for an exhibition game at UTRGV on Monday, Nov. 25 at 4 p.m. before finally playing its first home game on Nov. 29 in the StMU Thanksgiving Classic against Shippensburg at 6 p.m.
