SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's University Volleyball team gave No. 14 Angelo State all it could handle on Saturday afternoon but fell just short in five sets, 18-25, 25-22, 25-16, 14-25, 12-15.
For the second straight match and the fourth time in her career, junior
Landri Withers (Stephenville, Texas) tallied 19 kills, leading the Rattlers (14-9, 6-6). Freshman
Taylor Alston (San Antonio) smashed a career-best 16 kills, while senior
Alicia Virthe (Orlando, Fla.) chipped in 11.
The statistic of the day for the Rattlers was Virthe's digs. She almost doubled her previous career-high of 11 with 20, trailing only junior libero
Alyssa Koehl (New Braunfels, Texas) in the match, who led with 23 digs. Virthe also led the team and tied for match-high honors with three aces.
Both senior
Cali Nims (Corpus Christi, Texas) and Withers also recorded double figures in digs with 14 and 11, respectively, giving the pair another double-double on the year. Nims now has 14 this season and 43 in her career, while Withers has 11 on the year and 26 for her career.
The Rattlers disrupted the Rambelles (21-2, 11-1) with their tough serving, amassing nine aces with only three errors on the day.Â
St. Mary's heads back out on the road, playing at UT Permian Basin on Thursday at 6 p.m. and at Western New Mexico on Saturday at 7 p.m. (CT)/6 p.m. (MT). The Rattlers are currently holding down the eighth seed in the LSC standings with four matches remaining in the regular season.
