Defense Leads to Offense for Volleyball in Sweep Over OC

SAN ANTONIO — The defense was flying around the court all night for the St. Mary's University Volleyball, helping the Rattlers sweep Oklahoma Christian, 25-21, 25-16, 25-19 to improve to 3-0 in Lone Star Conference action and 11-3 overall.

The Rattlers outdug the Eagles (8-6, 0-3) 66-to-48 with four recording double digits. Junior Alyssa Koehl (New Braunfels, Texas) led the match with 20, hitting the 20-dig plateau for the third straight match.

Senior setter Cali Nims (Corpus Christi, Texas) added 12 digs and 38 assists for her seventh double-double of the year, while junior Landri Withers (Stephenville, Texas) also tallied her seventh double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs. Senior Leah Cruz (Laredo, Texas) chipped in 10 digs and added an ace.

Senior Alicia Virthe (Orlando, Fla.) tied Withers for game-high honors in the kills column, notching 14 on 21 swings for a match-high .524 hitting percentage. It is the eighth straight match she has been in double figures in kills and the sixth time she's hit over .400 on the year.

Sophomore middle blocker Olivia Rubio (San Antonio) led the team in blocks – collecting four for the fourth consecutive match.

After dropping the first two sets, the Eagles came out focused after the break, taking a 7-3 lead in the third stanza, but the Rattlers fought back to tie the score at 12-12. Tied at 18-18, the sixth tie of the set, Nims recorded a kill and then stepped back to the service line to serve five points in a row and give the Rattlers a match point. OC managed one more kill before senior Brianna Morris-Worth (Yukon, Okla.) smashed the final point for the team's sixth consecutive three-set sweep.

Morris-Worth posted a kill in four of the match's final five points to end the night with nine.

The Rattlers host Cameron for the second time this season on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Aggies were swept earlier on Friday by St. Edward's, and all seven matches in the Lone Star Conference on Friday night ended in 3-0 sweeps, with the home team winning six of the seven.
