DALLAS — The No. 13 St. Mary's University Men's Soccer team recorded its fourth consecutive shutout and clinched the 2024 Lone Star Conference regular season title with its 1-0 win at DBU on Wednesday night.
The Rattlers are a perfect 8-0-0 in league play with two games remaining on the schedule and are 12-2-2 on the year. The Patriots drop to 4-4-7 overall and 3-2-3 in LSC play.
"I'm so proud of these boys," said Head Coach
Johnny Clifford. "They have worked tirelessly for this, and now we're champions! Last year was a lot of adversity, and these guys have stuck together and come back stronger."
Senior defender
Lewis Nohar (Cumnock, Scotland) scored the lone goal of the contest, lofting the ball over the goalkeeper into the top corner of the net in the 28th minute on a pass from senior
Cooper Stephens (Richardson, Texas).
StMU had quite the scare in the 16th minute as senior captain
Andrick Ferrer (Buffalo, N.Y.) went down with an apparent knee injury. Ferrer did not return to the contest.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with our captain tonight, who suffered a tough injury," said Clifford.
Junior goalkeeper
Johnny Thurbin (Lingfield, Surrey, England) kept the clean sheet intact with a terrific save in the 88th minute on a rocket shot off the foot of Evan Pustejovsky, giving him his fifth of the night. Thurbin and the Rattlers' defense have not allowed a goal in the last 343:44 of game action.
The Rattlers took a season-low eight shots, while the Patriots took 15, including 11 in the second half. DBU also took five corner kicks with StMU taking only two.
