PORTALES, N.M. — There's not much more exciting for a team than a senior scoring the first goal of her career as the season winds down. To score it as the game-winning goal is icing on the cake.
St. Mary's University Women's Soccer senior
Bella Ramirez (El Paso, Texas), playing in the 16th game of her career, scored on a set piece in the box. She took the pass from freshman
Alysia Cano (Wylie, Texas) on the back post and headed it in during the 56th minute to give the Rattlers (6-5-3, 4-3-2) a 2-1 victory over Eastern New Mexico and snap a two-game losing streak.
Junior
Shelby Paniagua (Cibolo, Texas) scored the afternoon's first goal on a penalty kick. Sophomore
Malia Dominguez (Helotes, Texas) was fouled inside the box on a breakaway attempt. Paniagua sent the shot into the lower left corner of the box past the diving goalkeeper in the 10th minute.
Less than five minutes into the second half, the Greyhounds (2-10-1, 1-8-0) knotted the score at 1-1 on the first goal of the year by Ally Spicker. The score remained tied for five-and-a-half minutes until Ramirez kicked the game-winner.
Senior goalkeeper
Rebecca Difronzo (Bari, Italy) made five saves on the day, three in the first half and a pair in the second as ENMU took 10 shots throughout the 90 minutes. The Rattlers took the lone corner kick of the match in the first half.
The Rattlers remain on the road, playing at Texas A&M International on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before returning home for Senior Day on Friday night against Oklahoma Christian at 6 p.m.
