Mulkey and Thurbin Earn Player of the Week Honors

RICHARDSON, Texas — After defeating the rival, St. Mary's University Men's Soccer was awarded both the Defensive and Goalkeeper Player of the Week honors by the Lone Star Conference.

Junior defenseman Luke Mulkey scored the game's first goal against St. Edward's on Saturday, taking a free kick and heading it in over the outstretched gloves of the goalkeeper in the 40th minute. The Parker, Texas native helped anchor a back line that withstood 15 shots in the second half to improve to 3-0 in conference play.

Junior goalkeeper Johnny Thurbin made a career-best seven saves – all in the second half – to help the Rattlers defeat St. Edward's 2-1. The Lingfield, Surrey, England native, who leads the league with a .636 goals-against average, held off a team that took 15 shots in the second half and had not lost since Sept. 21. Thurbin and company have won three straight matches and six of their last seven.

Mulkey and Thurbin join Pau Mateu Deya (Sept. 24) and Gianluca Fiorini (Oct. 8) as Rattlers who have earned player of the week honors from the Lone Star this season.

St. Mary's hosts UT Tyler on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m., before traveling to Texas A&M International on Saturday evening.
