Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Drops Second-Straight One-Possession Game

LAREDO, Texas — Despite shooting 50% from the field, the St. Mary's University Men's Basketball team couldn't overcome a 15-1 run by Texas A&M International in the second half, falling 73-70 on Saturday afternoon in Laredo.

The Rattlers (5-7, 1-5 Lone Star Conference) shot better than the Dustdevils (7-6, 3-4 Lone Star) from both the field (50%-43.3%) and the three-point line (43.8%-26.1%), but TAMIU was 15-of-19 from the free throw line, while the StMU was just 3-for-9.

StMU fought back after trailing 62-52 with 8:15 remaining, cutting it to two points, 66-64 on a Dawson John (Brantford, Ontario, Canada) three-pointer with 4:13 on the clock, but could get no closer.

Senior Lachlan Bofinger (Sydney, Australia) tallied his seventh double-double of the season, grabbing 13 of the team's 23 rebounds and scoring 10, while senior Jalon Johnson (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) led the team with 13 points and senior Tyler Caron (Longview, Texas) chipped in 12.

Johnson edged out Bofinger for the lead in assists, 6-to-5 and senior Diego Gonzalez (Arecibo, Puerto Rico) led with two steals in his first start of the season.

After playing four-straight away from home, the Rattlers return to Bill Greehey to host #6 DBU on Thursday, Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m. The Patriots defeated Oklahoma Christian 88-71 on Saturday.

News & Notes
  • Lachlan Bofinger already has more double-doubles on his own (7) than the entire 2022-23 (4) and 2021-22 (4) teams and his seven are the most since Kevin Kotzur recorded 19 during his senior campaign in 2012-13.
  • Tyler Caron made two three-pointers to move into a tie for fifth place on the St. Mary's career charts with 133. He passes former teammate Kobe Magee (2019-22) who made 132 and knots Anthony Weeaks (2001-04).
  •  The start for senior Diego Gonzalez was the first of his St. Mary's career. A season ago, Gonzalez played in 20 of the team's 28 games.
  • Jaden Moore saw his first action this season, but it was short-lived as he was in the game for only one play and three seconds.
