Volleyball Stumbles Against Angelo State

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The St. Mary's University Volleyball team dropped a match in straight sets for only the second time this season, falling 25-20, 25-22, 25-17 to Angelo State on the second day of the LSC Tournament Preview.

After providing the spark off the bench on Thursday afternoon, sophomore OH Laurene Robinson (Bedford, Texas) earned the start on Friday and responded with eight kills and a .333 hitting percentage (8-1-21). She was second on the team in kills behind Landri Withers (Stephenville, Texas), who recorded nine.

Sophomore libero Alyssa Koehl (New Braunfels, Texas) continued to make sensational plays in the back row, leading the match with 15 digs and sophomore Isabella Waggoner (Texas City, Texas) recorded double digits for the fourth time this year with 10.

The St. Mary's blockers got their hands on a ton of balls at the net and ended the evening with six total blocks. Sophomore Dallasstar Johnson (San Antonio) led the match with four, while freshman Kelly Swyers (Austin, Texas) chipped in three.

Despite the match only being three sets, the teams were back-and-forth in each set and the match was closely contested. There were multiple lead changes in each of the three sets and a total of 17 ties – including eight in the third and deciding set.

The Rattlers served five aces and had only one service error in the match, serving at a 98.3 rate. Johnson and junior setter Cali Nims (Corpus Christi, Texas) each had a pair of aces. Nims also added 22 assists and narrowly missed another double-double with eight digs.

StMU closes out the non-conference season on Saturday against host, Texas A&M Kingsville. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
