LAWTON, Okla. – In a tough battle that saw half of the singles matches go the distance, the St. Mary's Women's Tennis team fell 5-2 at #13 Cameron on Saturday.

The Rattlers snap a 10-match winning streak with the loss, moving to 6-2 in Lone Star Conference play. The Aggies win their 12th consecutive match and move to 7-0 in league action.

The Rattlers #1 duos team of senior
Ashley Penshorn (Montgomery, Texas) and junior
Kyndall Quiroz (San Antonio), ranked 11th in the nation, won their 25th match of the season and 15th dual with a 6-2 win over the #45-ranked duo of Vasilisa Polunova and Anastasia Uspesnkaia.Â

The Aggies won the other two doubles matches for the initial team point and the 1-0 lead.

"We really needed to get the doubles point to have any advantage today," Director of Tennis
Bill Macom said. "They are a very difficult team to beat at their courts. So many deuce points did not bounce our way. However, I think we started to get a bit closer on this trip to everyone playing some of their better tennis of the spring."

CU took a 2-0 edge when senior
Angela Vargas (Ciudad Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico) got the Rattlers on the scoreboard with her 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 win on court two. It is the ninth-straight victory for Vargas as she goes to 17-4 in duals and 22-6 overall.

Junior
Elena Munoz (Corregidora, Queretaro, Mexico) broke Lea Manga's serve late in an exciting come-from-behind win 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 for the Rattlers second point of the day. It is Munoz' second win of the weekend and her 11th dual victory in 2023.

Gabi Ioannou (Melbourne, Australia) was the other Rattler that went all three sets, falling at #5 6-2, 7-6, 6-0.

The Rattlers close out the regular season, hosting UT Permian Basin on Friday, April 14 at 3 p.m. Western New Mexico for Senior Day on Saturday at Noon. Ioannou, Penshorn and Vargas will be honored for their amazing contributions to the Rattler program.
