LAWTON, Okla. – Despite eight of the nine spots in the lineup reaching base at least once in the game, the St. Mary's Baseball team dropped the series opener at Cameron on Friday evening, 8-5.
Â
The Rattlers (22-25, 20-25 Lone Star) scored five runs on nine hits with multi-hit games from both senior
Clay Bradford (Atascocita, Texas) and
Ryan McGowen (San Antonio). The Aggies (13-34, 13-32 LSC) took advantage of three StMU errors to score eight runs on nine hits.Â
Â
Senior
Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) recorded two of the team's five RBI and went 1-for-5, extending his hitting streak to 22-straight games.
Â
John Curtis (Athens, Tenn.) was on the mound for the first 5.1 innings. He surrendered three earned runs on six hits, walking two and tied his career-high with seven strikeouts. He falls to 4-5 on the season with the loss.
Matt Bundy (Whitehouse, Texas) pitched the final 2.2 frames, giving up two runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
Â
With one out in the second,
Devin Goins (San Antonio) drew a walk in his first plate appearance in three weeks after recovering from an injury. With two outs, McGowen tripled to the gap in right center.Â
Â
A costly throwing error gave the Aggies a 2-1 lead in the third, but the Rattlers immediately answered. Junior
Easton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) singled to left center and hustled to third on a double to the gap in left center by senior
Rudy Solis (El Paso, Texas). After a pitching change, the Aggies attempted to throw home off a ball put into play by Jake Elizondo (San Antonio), but Parrish slid in safely. Both Solis and Elizondo moved up on a wild pitch and both scored with two outs on a single to left by Mares for the 4-2 score.
Â
Cameron regained the advantage, scoring three in the bottom half of the frame. On the first pitch of the fifth, Bradford smashed his 13th home run of the year, clearing the fence in right field for the 5-5 tally.
Â
Once again, the Aggies had an answer, scoring one unearned run on one hit as the scoreboard read 6-5. Cameron added two in the seventh for the 8-5 final.
