REPEAT CHAMPS!! Women's Tennis Wins Second-Straight LSC Tournament

ARLINGTON, Texas – For the second-straight season, the St. Mary's Women's Tennis team has won the Lone Star Conference Tournament, doing so in 2023 with a 4-2 victory over fourth-seeded Angelo State.

Junior Kyndall Quiroz (San Antonio) clinched the second match of the weekend for the Rattlers, earning MVP honors after scoring the fourth point with her come-from-behind three-set victory. After dropping the first set, she got a late break of serve to win set two 7-5 and won 6-4 in the third. Quiroz also scored the fourth point in the quarterfinals against DBU.

"It was just a great team effort today," said Director of Tennis Bill Macom. "Even though we were physically and mentally tired from yesterday, we didn't let losing the doubles point affect us at all. Everyone did a great job listening to coaching and stepped up their games with a high energy level. That's what it takes."

Quiroz and senior doubles partner Ashley Penshorn (Montgomery, Texas) won 6-2 on court one to get the match started, but both the No. 2 and 3 teams dropped close 6-4 sets.

The Rambelles took a 2-0 lead with their win at No. 5 singles, but the Rattlers buckled down to win four straight singles matches.

Ashley Penshorn, Kyndall Quiroz (MVP), Stela Sifuentes and Angela Vargas pose with the trophy and their All-Tournament team medalsSenior Angela Vargas (Ciudad Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico) won her 14th-consecutive match of the season, defeating #55 Letizia Corsini 6-4, 6-1 to improve to 3-0 against nationally-ranked foes this season. She was named to the All-Tournament team for the second-straight year for her efforts at the Arlington Tennis Center.

Freshman Stela Sifuentes (Eagle Pass, Texas) knotted the team score at 2-2 with her straight-sets victory at court six. She opened with a 6-2 first set win and got a late break of serve to clinch a 7-5 score. Sifuentes also earned All-Tournament team honors for her efforts over the week.

Penshorn took on Lone Star Conference Player of the Year Dianela Rodriguez on court one and pulled out a thrilling 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 win, avenging a loss earlier this season to the senior. Penshorn earned the Rattlers fourth spot on the All-Tournament team, getting named to the team for the second-straight season. The win gives Penshorn 21 for the season and 78 for her career, giving her sole possession of the St. Mary's singles victories record.

Junior Elena Munoz (Corregidora, Queretaro, Mexico) was locked into the third set after she and Eva Schwartz each won a set by the score of 7-5.

The Rattlers earn the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Championship. The selection show will air on Monday, April 24th at 7:30 PM CT on NCAA.com.
