SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's Softball team made a valiant effort at a comeback against #16 West Texas A&M on Friday night but dropped both games of the doubleheader, 8-2 and 8-4.

The Rattlers even their Lone Star Conference record at 13-13 and move to 23-16 on the year, while the Lady Buffs win their tenth straight to improve to 31-4 overall and 22-4 in league action.

Junior
Lauren Gonzales (San Antonio) was 2-for-6 on the day, while
Ericka Gomez (Stafford, Texas) and
Reba Reyes (Brownsville, Texas) each doubled and sophomore
Jamison Holder (Magnolia, Texas) hit her team-leading fourth home run.

The two teams conclude the three-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Rattlers outscored the Buffs 2-1 over the final five innings, but WT scored seven in the opening two frames for the 8-2 win.

Gonzales recorded both runs and both hits for the Rattlers, singling in the third and sixth innings and adding another two stolen bases to her impressive total. Holder posted the lone RBI for the Rattlers.

Freshman
Emily Ayala (San Antonio) worked six solid innings in relief in the circle. She allowed only two runs on five hits to the potent offense, walking two and striking out one. Sophomore
Jadyn Abrego (San Antonio) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits in one inning.

GAME TWO RECAP
Once again, WT jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first six runs of the game. The Rattlers answered with four runs in the bottom of the third. Gomez doubled down the right field line and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher. She scored on a throwing error when the third baseman had to rush a throw to try to get the speedy
Destiny Salinas (San Antonio). Reyes doubled to plate Salinas and Holder blasted a home run well onto the berm in left center for the 6-4 tally.

The Lady Buffs got one run back in the top of the fourth and tacked on one in the seventh for the 8-4 final.

Senior
Catalina Cavazos (Houston) threw a complete game, allowing eight runs on 17 hits with two walks and eight strikeouts – one off her season high of nine from Arkansas Tech on Feb. 4 – to move to 10-6 in 2023.

The four hits for the Rattlers were all by different players and Holder drove in two of the four runs with her blast.
