ARLINGTON, Texas – St. Mary's Men's Tennis posted its first win in Lone Star Conference play this season with a 6-1 victory at DBU.
Â
The Rattlers (10-6, 1-3 Lone Star) did a terrific job of overcoming a tough Friday that saw several rain delays and the match time pushed back eight hours at #2 UT Tyler. Despite the late night and travel afterward, StMU managed its 13th consecutive win over the DBU Patriots (10-10, 0-3 Lone Star).
Â
"This was a good win for the guys," said Director of Tennis
Bill Macom. "They handled the windy conditions pretty well and stuck with their game plans."
Â
After suffering a 6-4 setback last night in their first dual action together, the tandem of
Ryan Koth (Boerne, Texas) and
Daniel Matheu Baldor (Madrid, Spain) won in tiebreak fashion, 7-6 (7-4) to give the Rattlers the doubles point after the #2 team lost and the #3 pairing of
Jake Faryniarz (San Antonio) and
Nicolas Llosa (Lima, Peru) knotted things at one set each with their 6-3 victory.
Â
Alvaro Soler, ranked 52nd in the nation according to the ITA, made quick work at number one singles, dropping only one game for the second team point, 6-1, 6-0.
Â
Koth snapped a three-match losing streak in dominant fashion, losing only five games in his 6-3, 6-2 win at number two and Llosa clinched the team victory with his 6-1, 6-4 win at number five.
Â
DBU scored its lone point of the day at number three, but the Rattlers kept the momentum high with a Faryniarz win 6-4, 7-6 (4) at number six. Freshman
Aaron Ben Anton (Remseck, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany) bounced back after a disappointing loss in the first set tiebreaker, 7-5 to win the next two sets 6-1, 7-5 for the 6-1 final.
Â
The Rattlers host the annual alumni game on April 1 at 9 a.m. before traveling to UAFS on Friday, April 7 at 1 p.m.
