ARLINGTON, Texas – The St. Mary's Women's Tennis team defeated its second-straight team of Patriots, winning 4-3 against #42 DBU on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Rattlers improved to 15-3 on the season and 3-1 in Lone Star Conference play, handing the Patriots their first loss in league action (2-1) and only their third loss of the year, 14-3.
Â
"This was a team win today," said Director of Tennis
Bill Macom. "We came through in the doubles point again, like yesterday. We had enough energy in three of the singles matches to cap off the day."
Â
Gabi Ioannou (Melbourne, Australia) and
Stela Sifuentes (Eagle Pass, Texas) won 6-4 at #3, while the #2 team of
Bailey Godwin (San Antonio) and
Angela Vargas (Ciudad Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico) won 6-3 to give the Rattlers point number one.
Â
Kyndall Quiroz (San Antonio) used her frustration for losing at #1 doubles and turned it into a quick singles win at #4 at 6-3, 6-1.
Â
After DBU made the score 2-1 with a straight sets win at #6 singles, Vargas won her fifth consecutive match at #2 singles, 6-1, 6-4. All five wins for Vargas have come in straight sets and she's dropped six or fewer games in all five matches.
Â
DBU won the next two points at #3 and #1, but Sifuentes clinched the team victory in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 for her sixth consecutive victory and the 4-3 team final.
Â
The Rattlers host both Angelo State and the annual alumni game on April 1. The match against the Rambelles will begin at noon with the Alumnae at 4 p.m.
