Softball Drops Close Contest to Dustdevils

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's Softball team had opportunities on Sunday but stranded at least one runner on base in six of the seven innings in a 2-1 loss to Texas A&M International.

The Rattlers (20-7, 10-5 Lone Star) scored one run on three hits with three walks and two hit batters.

Sophomore Madelline Bloom (Poway, Calif.) took the loss in the circle to move to 5-3 on the year. She allowed one earned run in 5.2 innings with one strikeout and no walks. Senior Catalina Cavazos (Houston) worked the final 1.1 innings with two hits and one strikeout.

Juniors Mackenzie Dugi (St. Hedwig, Texas) and Lauren Gonzales (San Antonio) collected two of the team's hits at the top of the batting order, while freshman Raegan Tennill (Corpus Christi, Texas) tallied her second double of the weekend and fourth of the season. Dugi also drew two of the club's three walks on the day.

TAMIU scored one run on three hits in the top of the first. Dugi walked and stole second. Gonzales followed with a sharply hit single just past the outstretched arm of the third baseman to put runners on the corners. Gonzales immediately stole second. With one out, sophomore Kaylynne Ruiz (Eagle Pass, Texas) was hit in the upper leg by a pitch to load the bases and junior Reba Reyes (Brownsville, Texas) plated Dugi with a sacrifice fly to right center to knot the score a 1-1.

The Dustdevils got one unearned run in the top of the sixth when Cavazos entered in the circle and won a 13-pitch at bat to retire the side with a groundout right back to her for the 2-1 final score.

St. Mary's begins a three-game series at #10 Lubbock Christian on Friday at 1 p.m. The Lady Chaps won 2-of-3 at Texas A&M Kingsville this weekend.
