Late Push by Baseball Not Enough in Series Finale

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's Baseball team scored four runs in the final three innings, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback and give the Rattlers the sweep on Monday afternoon over UT Permian Basin, 8-4.

The eight hits by the Rattlers were all recorded by different players and senior Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) reached base three times with two walks and a triple. He also scored two of the team's four runs in the series finale.

The Rattlers (3-1) used a trio of freshmen on the hill in their four pitchers as Kaleb Gauna (Hondo, Texas) took the loss in the start. He worked three innings and allowed only one hit, but he walked two and hit another three batters for two runs. Brandon Vasquez (Round Rock) worked the next two innings, surrendering one run on three hits with no walks and one hit batter. San Antonio freshman Brody Ticer finished out the game, pitching three innings and allowing only one hit.

The Falcons (1-3) scored their eight runs on eight hits with two in the second, one in the fourth and five in the sixth. StMU scored three in the seventh and one in the ninth.

The Rattlers travel to UT Tyler for a four-game series beginning on Friday at 7 p.m. The Patriot went 2-2 in their opening series, winning the final two games at Oklahoma Christian.
