WICHITA FALLS, Texas – After a long match on Friday, followed by a lengthy bus ride and an early curtain call on Saturday, the St. Mary's Women's Tennis team fell to a tough Midwestern State team, 5-2.
Â
Both seniors
Ashley Penshorn (Montgomery, Texas) and
Angela Vargas (Ciudad Acuña, Mexico) posted wins at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively.
"It is always difficult to play MSU at home," said Director of Tennis
Bill Macom. "We needed to get off to a good start with doubles and we didn't. We played with some great energy in singles, but mentally didn't quite get the job done. However, I'm still happy that we were able to pick up one win on this long road trip."
Â
Penshorn, ranked 12th in the nation and first in the South Central Region, defeated Amelia Lawson in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, while Vargas bounced back after getting broken late in the first set, 7-5 to win the next two, 6-2, 6-4.

Junior
Kyndall Quiroz (San Antonio) faced former teammates after joining the Rattlers (6-1, 1-1 Lone Star) this summer from the Mustangs (6-2, 1-0). Quiroz won the first set 6-2, but dropped an 8-6 tiebreaker in the second set and the third set 6-3.
Â
The Rattlers travel to UT Tyler to face Mississippi College on Saturday, March 4 before taking on Central Oklahoma on Sunday in Richardson.
