SAN ANTONIO — For the second-straight season, the St. Mary's University Men's Soccer Team has suffered heartbreak at the hands of the visiting Oklahoma Christian Eagles in the Lone Star Conference Championship, dropping a 2-1 decision in the quarterfinals on Saturday night.
Â
Both teams worked on reading the defenses in the first half, as there was no score, but the teams were more aggressive in the second half, leading to the three goals.
Â
The Eagles (5-8-6) struck first, only 2:14 into the second stanza as Isaias Silva's shot bounced off the left post and in for the 1-0 lead. They extended the lead to 2-0 in the 80th minute when John Osadolor Ighede broke away from a defender to lob the ball over senior
Andre Schlaefli's (Katy, Texas) head.
Â
Freshman
Gael Gallegos (Laredo, Texas) got back one of the goals in the 86th minute on a feed from senior
Gero Wolters (Niederkruchten, Germany), but the Rattlers (8-5-6) were unable to score in the final four minutes to even the tally.
Â
The Rattlers say goodbye to an outstanding senior class as
Cian Foley (Wexford, Ireland),
Josua Hall (Baiersbronn, Baden-Württemberg, Germany),
Jose Llano (Mexico City, Mexico),
Jose Rivera (Laredo),
Sebastian Rivera (Laredo) and Wolters all played their final contest in the Gold and Blue.
