Rough First Quarter Stymies Women's Basketball

SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's University Women's Basketball couldn't recover from a rough first quarter on Saturday evening, dropping a 67-56 decision to Oklahoma Baptist in the conclusion of the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Tournament.

The Bison (3-3) jumped out to a 20-8 lead after the first quarter and despite the Rattlers (0-4) outscoring them in two of the final three quarters, the Gold and Blue could never get over the hump for the lead. StMU won the second quarter, 19-13 and outscored the Bison 21-18 in the fourth quarter.

Freshman Taylor Haggan (Parker, Texas) led the team with 18 points and five rebounds. She also had a team-best two steals and two blocked shots.

Senior Teanna Huggins (San Antonio) posted a career-best seven assists, missing the StMU Thanksgiving Tournament record by one. She also only had one turnover in 21 minutes as the team recorded a positive assist-to-turnover ratio for the first time this season (16 assists, 13 turnovers).

The Rattlers also made a season-best six three-pointers in the game and five different players connected from deep.

OBU was led by Jaedyn Getman with 24 points and nine rebounds, while Madison Chambers added 14 points and Kennedy Large swiped a team-high four balls.

St. Mary's turns its attention to Lone Star Conference play, heading west to New Mexico for the Lone Star Conference opener at Western New Mexico on Thursday, Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m. CT.
