Truitt a Part of All Three Goals as Women's Soccer Wins 3-1

SAN ANTONIO — There was nothing unlucky about the St. Mary's University Women's Soccer match against Eastern New Mexico on Saturday afternoon, winning 3-1 in the team's 13th match of the year.

It also didn't take long for the Rattlers' (6-2-5, 5-1-1 Lone Star Conference) first strike as senior Alexis Truitt (Boerne, Texas) drove down the sideline and found freshman Malia Dominguez (Helotes, Texas) streaking down the field with her. Dominguez fired in her first collegiate goal from the middle of the box for the 1-0 lead only 49 seconds into the match.

With seconds remaining in the first half, Eastern New Mexico (1-8-4, 0-6-1 Lone Star) scored as the teams scrambled in the box for possession of the ball. Brianna Eye found the bottom right part of the net with her kick to knot the score at 1-1.

In the 55th minute, Truitt went up over a defender to head the ball into goal off a corner kick from junior Barbara Smith (Las Cruces, N.M.). It ended up being the winning goal and the third of the season for Truitt.

Sixty-seven seconds later, Truitt again streaked down the sidelines, finding Sydney Varela (El Paso, Texas) in the middle of the box for her fifth goal of the year and the 3-1 final tally.

As they've been most of the year, the Rattlers were more aggressive in the second half, out-shooting the Greyhounds 13-to-5 after the break and earning nine corners in the second 90 minutes.

Junior goalkeeper Rebecca Difronzo (Bari, Italy) made two great saves in the first half, but the defense in front of her held the Greyhounds in check in the second half.

St. Mary's hosts Texas A&M International on Wednesday night at 5 p.m. in a doubleheader with the men's team. The Dustdevils worked a draw at Midwestern State, 1-1 on Saturday afternoon.
