Women's Soccer Extends Win Streak to Four

CANYON, Texas – For the fourth-straight game, the St. Mary's Women's Soccer Team dominated an opponent, defeating Fort Lewis 3-0 on Sunday on the West Texas A&M campus.

The Rattlers (4-0) had three different players score a goal in sophomore Nayeli Celedon (San Antonio), senior Juni Ejere (Weatherford, Texas) and freshman Sydney Varela (El Paso, Texas). Senior captain Kylie Von Holle (Midland, Texas) assisted on the last two goals, while senior Jackie Miller (El Paso) fed Celedon just two minutes into the game.

The goals for Celedon and Varela were the first of the season for each, while Ejere netted her sixth goal.

Once again, the Rattlers struck early and often, scoring a pair of goals in the first three-and-a-half minutes. In the last three contests, the team has put a point on the scoreboard within the first two minutes.

Goalkeeper Rebecca Difronzo (Bari, Italy) added another two saves to her season total, but the offensive pressure by the Rattlers kept the ball away from her the vast majority of the afternoon.

St. Mary's continues playing the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, traveling to Gunnison and Alamosa, Colorado next weekend for matchups at Western Colorado on Friday and Adams State on Sunday. The Rattler begin Lone Star Conference on Sept. 14, hosting rival St. Edward's at 5 p.m.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER & TEAM NOTES
  • Senior Juni Ejere has scored at least one goal in all four games this season and leads the Lone Star Conference with six.
  • The 4-0 start for the Rattlers is the best since the 2016 team began with four straight wins. The 1998, 1999 and 2001 teams started 5-0 in school history and no Rattlers team has ever won their first six.
  • St. Mary's is outscoring opponents 17-2 through the first four contests.
  • Kylie Von Holle recorded a career-high two assists against Fort Lewis. She entered the game with only one assist in her career, doing so last season against UT Permian Basin.
