Gonzales Home Run Lifts Softball to Senior Day Split

SAN ANTONIO – On senior day at The Park, the St. Mary's Softball team pulled off the split against No. 13 Texas A&M Commerce, dropping game one 6-1 before rebounding to run-rule the Lions 9-0 in game two.

After approximately a 20-minute delay for an injured umpire where the count sat at 2-2, senior Abigale Carney (El Paso, Texas) blistered a shot over to left field, scoring a pair of runs and fellow senior Amber Gonzales blasted a home run into the home bullpen for two more runs and the walkoff victory in the nightcap.

Junior pitcher Catalina Cavazos (Houston) pitched a complete game shutout, giving up a leadoff double and retiring the next 15 straight.

Seniors Victoria Aldridge and Jayme Johns from Elgin, Texas each went 2-for-3 in game two, as did senior Bari Christian (San Antonio). Carney had three RBIs, while Johns, Christian and Gonzales each had two as the team tallied nine runs on nine hits.

Freshman Jadyn Abrego (San Antonio) took the loss in game one, though she allowed only two runs on four hits in four innings, walking four and striking out another four.

Aldridge was 3-for-3 in game one, recording three of the team's five hits and she drove in senior Tiffany Licon (Austin) in the bottom of the seventh for the lone run of the game.

With the split, the Rattlers are now 32-11 on the year and 16-8 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Lions are 33-11 with an 18-6 league mark.

The Rattlers finish out the regular season with the final eight games on the road.
