Softball Works Split At Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. – The St. Mary's Softball team split with Cameron on Friday, dropping the first game 6-5, but bouncing back for the lopsided 9-1 victory in game two.

Senior third baseman Tiffany Licon (Austin, Texas) had an outstanding doubleheader, going 4-for-6 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk and had seven assists in the field. Freshmen Jamison Holder (Magnolia, Texas) and Lauryn Ramos (Marion, Texas) each hit home runs in game two, while sophomore Reba Reyes (Brownsville, Texas) hit her first of the season in the opener.

The Rattlers travel the short 87 miles from Lawton to Oklahoma City to face Oklahoma Christian in a doubleheader beginning at noon on Sunday.

GAME ONE RECAP
Freshman Jadyn Abrego (San Antonio) pitched a solid five innings in the circle in a no decision. She allowed one run on four hits, walked three and struck out four. Freshman Savannah Youngblood (Kingwood, Texas) moved to 9-2 on the season after allowing four earned runs on five hits with one walk in the final frame.

Eight of the nine spots in the order reached base at least once for the Rattlers, led by Licon's 3-for-3 performance. She also scored two of the team's five runs. Senior Jayme Johns (Elgin, Texas) drove in two runs.

Freshman Cassidy Mageors (Freeport, Texas) doubled to right center to start the game. She scooted to third on a groundout by senior Victoria Aldridge (Elgin) and scored on a groundout by James.

The Rattlers doubled their lead with one run in the third. With one out, Licon singled to left, moved to second on a groundout by Mageors and scored on a single to left by Aldridge.

Licon singled through the right side to begin the fifth, and with one out, a throwing error by the short stop on a hard-hit ball off the bat of Aldridge put runners at the corners. Aldridge stole second and a Johns single to center scored the third run of the afternoon. Sophomore Ericka Gomez (Stafford, Texas) grounded out to second to plate Aldridge for the 4-0 advantage.

Cameron homered to break onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth, but Reyes answered with one of her own with one out in the top of the sixth – hitting it out over the right field fence for the 5-1 tally.

The Aggies took the lead with a grand slam and an error on a stolen base attempt for the 6-5 win.

GAME TWO RECAP
Junior Catalina Cavazos (Houston) continued to dominate in the circle, improving to 12-0 this season with the 9-1 victory. She allowed eight hits, walked one and struck out three in the seven innings, pitching her second-straight complete game and fifth in the last six games.

In the nightcap, all nine hitters reached base at least once. Holder reached in all four plate appearances, while senior Bari Christian (San Antonio) was on base three times, scoring three runs and garnering two hits – the only multi-hit game of the second game for the Rattlers.

Christian doubled off the wall in right center to lead off the second inning. Ramos reached first on an errant throw by the third baseman and promptly stole second with one out. Holder walked to load the bases and Licon followed with a walk for the first run of the game. A ground out to the right side of the infield by Mageors plated the second run of the game.

With two outs in the third frame, Christian walked and Carney reached on a throwing error by the third baseman. Ramos homered over the left center wall for three runs and the 5-0 advantage.

The defense came up big for Cavazos in the bottom of the fourth. With a runner on first and one out, Haley Castle doubled down the left field line, but Aldridge threw to Mageors who got the ball into Holder at home to tag out the lead runner. Holder noticed Castle was hung up between second and third, ran at her and threw to Licon at third to start the rundown and Mageors eventually tagged her to end the frame.

Gomez doubled to right center to lead off the seventh and Christian laid down a beautiful bunt for a single to put runners on the corners. On the first pitch of Carney's at bat Christian stole second and Carney followed with a double to left to score two. With one out, Holder blasted a shot over the left field fence for the first home run of her career and a 9-0 advantage.

The Aggies scored one run in the seventh on a double steal for the 9-1 final.
