SAN ANTONIO – After an undefeated regular season, the St. Mary's Men's Soccer Team cleaned house on the annual Lone Star Conference awards.
Â
Senior defender
Lewis Wilson (Aberdeen, Scotland) was named both the Player and Defensive Player of the Year, while junior
Andre Schlaefli (Katy, Texas) earned Goalkeeper of the Year honors. Senior
Ariel Cardozo (Ciudad de Este, Paraguay) was tabbed the league's Newcomer of the Year and
Calum Murdoch (Christchurch, New Zealand) earned Freshman of the Year honors.
Â
Wilson is tied for the team lead with four goals, despite being a defender and he's tied for second on the club with nine points. He has one game winner to his credit and is 1-for-1 in penalty kicks after nailing one with three seconds left in the regular season finale.
Â
Schlaefli has amassed 42 saves on the year with 11 shutouts and has an amazing 0.26 goals against average. He has been in goal for almost 1400 minutes this season and allowed only four goals.
Â
Cardozo made an immediate impact to the team, starting in 16 games with three goals – two of which are game winners and an assist, all while helping the back line shut down opponents and help the Rattlers tie the Lone Star record for shutouts in a season with 12.
Â
Murdoch has scored two goals as a true freshman – and both are game winners – hitting the first goal against Texas A&M San Antonio and the initial goal against DBU on Oct. 5. Five of his eight shots this year are on goal.
Â
In total, nine different Rattlers earned awards at the banquet to kick off the Tournament Semifinals plus
Johnny Clifford was named the Coach of the Year.
Â
Schlaefli, junior midfielder
Dani Gimena (Ondara, Alicante, Spain) and senior midfielder
Deni Cresto (Curitiba, Parana, Brazil) were all named to the All-Academic team in addition to their all-conference honors.
Â
Six Rattlers were tabbed on the First Team in Cardozo, Cresto, sophomore defender
Andrick Ferrer, senior midfielder
Cian Foley (Wexford, Ireland), Schlaefli and Wilson. Both Gimena and senior defender
Sebastian Rivera (Laredo, Texas) earned Second-Team honors and Murdoch was named to the All-Freshman team.
Â
The Rattlers, currently ranked fifth in the nation, begin action in the Lone Star Conference Tournament on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Oklahoma Christian in the semifinals.
