SAN ANTONIO – St. Mary's junior Jake Mares continues to get respect for his play on the diamond as he was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) 2021 South Central All-Region Baseball Second Team.

Mares, a shortstop from Fort Worth, Texas, earned the honors after leading the Rattlers in batting average (.386), runs scored (47), hits (59), sacrifice hits (6) and triples (3). He was also tied for the team lead with eight doubles and second with 18 stolen bases.

Earlier in the week Mares was named to the Lone Star All-Conference First Team and the All-Defensive team after having a .957 fielding percentage.

This is the first regional honor for Mares and the first Rattler selection to the team since 2018 when Jacob Aguilar, Fernando Fernandez-Beltran and Zach De La Garza were all named to the Second Team.

Player of the Year honors went to Haydn McGeary from Colorado Mesa, while Angelo State's Trent Baker was named Pitcher of the Year. Chris Hanks, long-time head coach of the CMU Mavericks was named Coach of the Year as they are currently the top-ranked team in the country. A total of 17 Lone Star Conference student-athletes were named to the two teams.
