SURPRISE, Ariz. – The 30
th-ranked St. Mary's Women's Tennis team ended the 2021 season in the NCAA Quarterfinals with a loss to #1 Indianapolis on Wednesday afternoon, 4-2.
The two Rattlers points came from senior
Maria Garcia (Valencia, Spain) and junior
Alice Thane (Elloughton, East Yorkshire, England).
Garcia, ranked 32
nd in the nation pulled off the upset over 8
th-ranked Anna Novikova at number two singles, getting the straight-set victory 6-2, 6-4. It was the Rattlers first point, pulling them within one, 2-1 after the team dropped the doubles point and junior
Ashley Penshorn (Montgomery, Texas) lost in straight sets to the number one player in the nation, Nikol Alekseeva.
Thane won a tie-breaker thriller in the second-set to pull off the straight-sets win at number six singles. Thane won 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) over Sofia Sharonova.
The Rattlers finish the 2021 season with a 17-6 overall record after going 7-2 in Lone Star Conference play and upsetting #9 Angelo State in the NCAA Regionals. All six losses during the year were to either nationally ranked Division II teams or Division I squads.
