SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's Softball team moved to .500 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of UT Permian Basin on Friday evening. The Rattlers took the first game 8-6 and cruised to an 8-0 run-rule in the night cap.
Game One Recap
The Rattlers and Falcons combined to leave six runners on base in the first 2.5 innings but St. Mary's was able to push a run across in the home half of the third when
Jayme Johns and
Victoria Aldridge led off with back-to-back singles. A UT Permian Basin error allowed Aldridge to score, giving the Rattlers a 1-0 lead.
In the next frame, the St. Mary's offense broke the game open with five runs on four hits.
Alex Moreno led off the inning with a moonshot that cleared the left field wall.
Amber Gonzales followed up the Moreno homer by singling to right field and advancing to third when the right-fielder misplayed the ball.
Cassidy Brawley drew a walk and stole second to put runners at second and third with Johns coming to the plate. A single from Johns plated Gonzales.
Bari Christian picked up two RBI with a double to the wall, scoring Johns and Brawley. The final run of the inning came on a sacrifice fly from
Tiffany Licon, scoring Johns.
When it looked as if the Rattlers may get a run-rule, the Falcons clawed back into the game, scoring a run in the fifth and six in the sixth to tie the game at six.
Abigale Carney was the hero of game one as the senior blasted her sixth home run of the year with a runner on, giving St. Mary's an 8-6 lead with one inning to play.
Alex McLennan earned the win, throwing 1.1 innings out of the bullpen. McLennan did not allow a hit in the outing.
Six Rattlers had a hit led by Johns and Gonzales with two each.
Game Two Recap
Lauren Garcia picked up an RBI in the first inning for the Rattlers, driving in Christian who doubled earlier in the inning.
Moreno led off the home half of the second inning with a single and gave way to pinch-runner,
Katerina McLennan. Gonzales ripped a triple to right field, scoring McLennan to double the Rattlers lead. Brawley made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly to score Gonzales.
Two errors and a sacrifice fly from Aldridge allowed St. Mary's to score three more runs, extending their lead to 6-0. Brawley, Johns, and Christian each scored a run in the inning.
Tiffany Licon and Gonzales singled in the fifth to put the potential game-winning runs aboard. Johns picked up her fourth hit of the day, a triple that scored Licon and Gonzales, ending the game by way of the eight-run-rule.
Seven players recorded a hit, led by Johns and Gonzales with two.
Alex McLennan picked up her second win of the night, going five innings and allowing just two hits.
