Softball Splits With #8 Eagles

SAN ANTONIO – A pair of three-run innings in the nightcap helped the St. Mary's Softball team earn a split against eighth-ranked Oklahoma Christian on Sunday afternoon. The Rattlers dropped game one 6-0 but bounced back for the 9-6 victory in game two.

After recording just three hits in the opener, the Rattlers (10-12, 6-6 Lone Star Conference) scored nine runs on 12 hits, crossing the plate at least once in five of the six innings. The Eagles (17-5, 9-3 Lone Star) scored one in the seventh, but were unable to complete the comeback.

Freshman Reba Reyes (Brownsville, Texas) hit the second home run of her StMU career, a solo shot in the fourth to give the Rattlers the lead for good. She was 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI, two runs scored, three walks, a sacrifice fly and 1-for-1 in stolen bases.

Both juniors Jayme Johns (Elgin, Texas) and Victoria Aldridge (Elgin) were 3-for-7 in the doubleheader and Aldridge successfully swiped two bases.

Freshman Sara Robertson (Lorena, Texas) got the decision in both contests, throwing 10.1 innings. She walked only one and surrendered five earned runs on six hits to move to 3-3 on the season.

St. Mary's will face Eastern New Mexico in a doubleheader on Friday at Lubbock Christian and then head to Canyon for a doubleheader at West Texas A&M on Sunday.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Rattlers had base runners in five of the seven frames, but were unable to push any across in the 6-0 loss. Johns, Aldridge and junior Bari Christian (San Antonio) each had a hit in the contest.

The Eagles scored their six runs on 10 hits and they committed the lone error.

Robertson threw 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with a walk. Sophomore Isabella Saldivar (San Antonio) pitched the final two frames in scoreless relief. She gave up two hits, walked one, hit one and struck out one.

GAME TWO RECAP
Senior Julia Cruz (Asherton, Texas) started in the circle, but gave way to Robertson for the final six innings.

Johns and Aldridge set the table for the Blue & Gold, getting two hits each out of the top two spots in the lineup, while Reyes and senior Amber Gonzales (El Paso, Texas) each added two hits from the 5-6 spots. Both Reyes and senior Abigale Carney (El Paso) had two RBI each as the team did a good job of bunching together hits.

All nine spots in the order reached base at least once and seven of the nine scored at least one run.

Oklahoma Christian scored one in the first and the Rattlers immediately tied the score with one in the bottom half. The Eagles scored two in the second and StMU got one back. In the third, OC added two more and a three-spot by the Rattlers knotted the score at 5-5. The Rattlers took the lead on the Reyes home run in the fourth, added three in the sixth and limited the Eagles to one in the seventh for the win.
