COMMERCE, Texas – The order of the games may have flipped from Friday to Saturday, but the results for the St. Mary's Softball team were the same. The Rattlers (4-6) opened day two of the Irwin Classic with a 13-4 to #3 Augustana (2-1) which included a 3.5 hour rain delay, but they bounced back for the 10-4 victory over seventh-ranked Texas A&M-Commerce (4-4) on Saturday.
The trio of
Jayme Johns (Elgin, Texas),
Alex Moreno (El Paso, Texas) and
Reba Reyes (Brownsville, Texas) were all 4-for-7 at the plate during the two games. Moreno also paced the team with five RBI, while Reyes added four.
St. Mary's concludes the classic on Sunday with a pair of non-conference games against league foes, facing Texas Woman's at 2:30 p.m. and Texas-Tyler at 4:45 p.m.
GAME ONE RECAP
Augustana jumped out to the early lead in the first game of the day and the Rattlers attempt at a comeback fell short as they fell 13-4 in five innings.
The Vikings scored their 13 runs on 12 hits and were aided by four StMU errors, while the Rattlers scored four runs on eight hits with one Augustana miscue.
Senior
Alex McLennan (Austin, Texas) lost her first game of the year (3-1) in the circle. All 13 runs were charged to her, she walked two and struck out four in 4 2/3 innings. Senior
Julia Cruz (Asherton, Texas) pitched the last 1/3 inning, walking one and striking out one.
Johns was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Reyes was a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, as the top two in the batting order accounted for five of the team's eight hits. One of Reyes' hits was a double for the lone extra-base knock and junior
Bari Christian (San Antonio) stole a base.
GAME TWO RECAP
A sixth-run seventh inning propelled the Rattlers past the Lions in the nightcap. St. Mary's scored 10 runs on 12 hits, while Commerce tallied four runs on six hits.
Moreno was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBI with a double and her second home run of the year. Senior
Amber Gonzales (Austin) was 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored and Johns went 2-for-4. Junior
Tiffany Licon (Austin) also posted a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a walk, run scored and two RBI.
Freshman
Sara Robertson (Lorena, Texas) started in the circle, giving up four runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 4.1 innings of a no decision. Cruz finished out the fifth inning, walking one in three batters faced. Sophomore
Isabella Saldivar (San Antonio) won her first game of 2021, walking one and fanning two in two innings of work.
