TAKING THE PITCH
The St. Mary's Rattlers take on the No. 8 Midwestern State Mustangs in the Lone Star Conference Tournament Semi-Final on Friday night. The Rattlers enter the contest after defending home turf against UT-Tyler on Wednesday night in a 3-1 victory.
The fourth-seeded Rattlers are looking for a little bit of payback after dropping a close contest to the Mustangs earlier in the year, 2-1. The Rattlers played well in what was a statistically even contest, but an own-goal ultimately sank the Rattlers' ship.
The Mustangs earned the top seed in the LSC tournament after an impressive 15-2 record during the season. The Mustangs have relied on a combination of explosive offense and stifling defense as they joined the ranks of the nation's elite in 2021. The Mustangs are led by Trevor Amann and Mere Escobar offensively. Both players tallied double-digit goal totals this year.
RATTLER STORYLINES
- The Rattlers are looking to bounce the Mustangs from the LSC tournament for the first time in their playing history. MSU has won the last two meetups in the postseason.
- Alonso Rodriguez continues to score for StMU, recording his team-best eighth goal against UT-Tyler in the quarter-finals.
- St. Mary's will try and earn their first ever finals berth since joining the LSC.
SCOUTING MIDWESTERN STATE
- The Mustangs, who have an excellent history in men's soccer, look for their 16th win against StMU. If successful, the Mustangs will have reached that mark in sixth consecutive season (excluding the COVID-19 year).
- Trevor Amann leads MSU in goals (16) and total points (38). He also leads the conference in goals scored and shots taken.
- The Mustangs are 25-4 all-time against StMU.
UP NEXT
The winner will advance to the Lone Star Conference Championship against the winner of West Texas A&M and Lubbock Christian.
